Respecting Diversity and Building Tolerance

Respecting Diversity and Building Tolerance: Learning from Each Other – there was a symposium held dedicated to this topic.

I was the lucky one to participate in this symposium, which took place in my home country Dushanbe, Tajikistan on June 9 – 11 organized by American Councils of Tajikistan. Let me give you a little description about this event. There were participants from Bangladesh, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan Afghanistan and Tajikistan. All of these participants are alumni of US government sponsored future leaders exchange program: YES and FLEX. Have you ever thought of what tolerance means to you and whether you are tolerate? So, at this symposium I got a chance to learn about different cultures, religions, and people, and the main thing is how to be tolerated and respect the things around you. I also would like to hear from you what do you think tolerance is? And whether you consider yourself tolerated?
We all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different and yet the same. by Anne Frank

Another really important topic we have covered in this symposium is “Respect of Diversity”. That is why there were so many representatives of different countries invited to this event. We wanted to share and teach each other about the richness and uniqueness of each of our cultures, lifestyle, tradition; this way everybody now knows about differences and considering the diverse society we live in, it is very important to have respect to people around you, to what they believe, to what they wear, eat and etc. What does diversity mean to you? For me, diversity is something that makes the society we live in more interesting and more colorful, giving us the opportunity to be able to get to know different people, widen our knowledge about the nations living in this world with us. The things that we share in our world are far more valuable than those which divide us.

There are some quotes I’ve include, that are told by famous people:

1. “We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color”
by Maya Angelou

2.
If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place.

by Margaret Mead

And now I am at Wake Forest University, participating in Ben Franklyn Transatlantic Fellows Initiative: Summer Institute for Youth. This is a great opportunity to widen my knowledge about differences that were made by great leaders of the world and many other usefull and interesting information.

Hope you enjoy reading it, and please if you'll have any questions feel free to contact me.
